Frequently asked questions
Is AskBeforeYouSend free?
Yes. Every feature is free, with no account and no paid plan. The site is supported by clearly labeled sponsors that pass our non-predatory ad policy.
Does my screenshot get uploaded?
No. The words in your screenshot are read on your own phone or computer. The picture is never sent to us.
Can it tell me a message is safe?
No, and nothing can promise that. It looks for common warning signs. Even when it finds none, never send money, gift cards, crypto or codes because of a message, and call the real number to check.
Where do I report a scam?
The FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, the FBI at complaint.ic3.gov, scam texts to 7726, and the company that was impersonated. The Report it button walks you through it.
Who is this for?
Everyone who gets scam, spam or abusive messages. It's built first for older adults, with big text and simple steps, and for the families who help them.
How does the checker work?
It looks for common scam warning signs (gift cards, crypto, wires, secrecy, threats, remote-access apps, fake links, prize fees and more), drawn from FTC, FBI and other official warnings. It runs on your device.
Is it ever wrong?
Yes, it can miss new tricks or flag a real message. That's why it never says "safe", and always tells you to check with the real company using a number you already know.
Do you use AI?
Not right now. The checker uses fixed rules that run on your device. We may add an optional AI second opinion later; if we do, we'll say so on the page, only the text would be sent, and it could only make the answer more careful, never less.
What about harassing or threatening messages?
If you're in danger, call 911. For harassment, block the sender, keep screenshots, and report it on the app or to your phone company. Our Report page lists where to go.
Does the site sell my information?
No. There are no accounts. Report logs stay on your own device. Newsletter emails are used only to send the newsletter.
How do you make money if it's free?
Clearly labeled sponsorships and ads that pass our non-predatory policy, such as identity protection or bank fraud tools. Sponsors never change what the checker says.
Can I put this on my phone like an app?
Yes. Open the site in your browser and choose "Add to Home Screen".
