Cash App scams: fake support, "cash flips" and payment screenshots

Updated . By the AskBeforeYouSend editorial team (how we fact-check). Fact-checked against the official sources listed at the bottom.

Short answer: Cash App says your bank, your payment app and the IRS will never ask for your password, PIN or one-time sign-in code. Every "cash flip" offer is a scam, and so is anyone who overpays you and wants the difference back. Get help only inside the Cash App app or at 1 (800) 969-1940, the support number the FTC lists.

Key facts

What it looks like

I can flip $50 into $500 for you today. Send $50 to my $Cashtag and you'll get $500 back within an hour. Only 3 spots left!

A made-up example in the style Cash App describes. These often come as social media messages.

How the scam works

  1. A stranger offers to multiply your money, often after sending a small test payment back to build trust.
  2. A fake "support agent" asks for your sign-in code or PIN to "fix" your account.
  3. Someone sends a fake payment notice, or overpays and asks you to return the extra.
  4. A "giveaway" or "survey" asks you to pay first to collect.

Red flags

What to do now

  1. Don't send money and don't share any code.
  2. Check your balance inside the app, not in an email or text.
  3. Report the payment in the app (choose "Report an issue"), or get help at 1 (800) 969-1940.
  4. Turn on the app's Security Lock so every payment needs your face, fingerprint or PIN.
  5. Report it to the FTC. If a card or bank is linked, call that bank too.
Never send money, gift cards, crypto or verification codes because of a call, text or message. Hang up and call the real number.
