PayPal invoice scam: a bill you didn't order with "call us" in the note

Updated . By the AskBeforeYouSend editorial team (how we fact-check). Fact-checked against the official sources listed at the bottom.

Short answer: Don't pay it and don't call the number in it. PayPal says scammers send invoices and money requests, sometimes through PayPal itself, with an alarming note telling you to call a fake customer service number. Log in to the PayPal app or website yourself to see whether anything is really due, and forward fake PayPal emails to [email protected].

Key facts

What it looks like

Invoice from Billing Dept. Amount due: $499.99 for antivirus protection. Seller note: If you did not authorize this purchase, call PayPal Support at 1-808-555-0164 within 24 hours to cancel.

A made-up example of the "alarmist note" pattern PayPal describes.

How the scam works

  1. You get an invoice or money request for something you never ordered, sometimes sent through PayPal's real system.
  2. The note warns of a charge or fraud and gives a phone number to call.
  3. The "agent" asks for your login, card details or remote access, or tells you to send money to fix it.

What to do now

  1. Don't pay it, call the number, or open links.
  2. Open the PayPal app or type paypal.com yourself to check your account.
  3. Report the invoice from inside your PayPal account, forward fake emails to [email protected], then delete them.
  4. If you shared details or paid, call PayPal at 1 (888) 221-1161 and your bank, and report it to the FTC.
Never send money, gift cards, crypto or verification codes because of a call, text or message. Hang up and call the real number.

Questions

The invoice really came from PayPal's email address. Is it real?

Not necessarily. PayPal says scam invoices and money requests can be sent through PayPal. What matters is whether you ordered it. Check inside your account and never call a number written in the note.

Example messages are made up to show the pattern unless we say otherwise. Phone numbers in examples use the fictional 555 range.
